Syllabus supplement Tests for Truth, Beauty, and Goodness -- Phil A231 William Jamison - Instructor Test 2Directions: Answer any three of the questions below in three essays. Essays may be as long as you feel necessary, but must be at least 300 words each, and should demonstrate an understanding of the main point of the question and it's relevance for us today. Avoid plagiarism! They should be e-mailed to: wsjamison@UAA.ALASKA.EDU. 1. On what grounds could something be considered more beautiful than something else? Does this imply that there is something most beautiful? 2. Describe what you consider the most beautiful literature and explain why you feel that way about it. 3. What is an analogy? Note page 264 in Wittgenstein for a discussion of this. 4. What is catharsis and how does it relate to art? 5. Contrast Sheppard's approach to philosophical problems with Wittgenstein's. 6. In a sense, are we robbed of true intimacy with other people by the way the media gives us a virtual sense of intimacy? |
