What we mean by the philosophical quest today is something relatively peculiar in our history. You may think all people throughout all time face this issue, but it turns out instead to be a very unique dilemma. People in fundamentalist societies do not face the quest. For them, the question central to their lives is how to live up to the demands of their faith. The demands are clear, the road map is clear and the discipline they need is taught by professionals in the culture. What remains for them is how to succeed in applying those lessons so they live their lives in accordance with them.
But
the philosophical quest as we face it today requires two things:
A pluralist society where metanarratives are
in conflict.
A metanarrative for the quest that describes
the stages an individual goes through on the quest.
