Directions: Answer any three of the questions below in three essays. Essays may be as long as you feel necessary, but should be at least 300 words each, and should demonstrate an understanding of the main point of the question and it's relevance for us today. 1. What kind of secular religion did J. S. Mill espouse and how was it different from that of August Comte? (Whose ideas do we follow in the US today?)

2.  Feurebach argued for a secular religion he called Humanism. How did that become part of the Marxist ideal for Communism?

3. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche advocated a "religion of one" so to speak. Why did they feel it was up to each person to define their own values?

4. Pragmatism is essentially different from both Existentialism and Marxism in what significant ways?

5. What is the connecting link in the reasoning of Berlin, Taylor, and Ignatieff?

6. How has contemporary brain science impacted philosophy?
