Lecture 6

Plato 4

At this point we are still behind the syllabus and today concentrated on Meno and touched on Symposium.

But now we can see the pattern of the Socratic dialog as an idea is the center of discussion, definitions for it are given - how the word is used in many different contexts. This leads to Socrates asking what the central nature of the idea is rather than all of the uses for it. This leads to a clearer and clearer abstraction (as with shape and color) until it becomes obvious that such a clear abstraction can't be reached regarding the target concepts - the holy, virtue (or excellence), or Love.

This leads further to the conclusion that virtue cannot be taught (in the Meno) and so virtue must be divine.
