Syllabus supplement

Attendance:

Attendance in class is a transformative process. It is like exercise. Finding out what exercises were to be done on a certain day is not equivalent to doing the exercises. This process is also a dynamic interaction between members of the class and the instructor so is not the sort of "exercise" that can be achieved alone at home. On the other hand, I realize that our busy schedules often cause conflicts that mean that an occasional absence is necessary. So attendance is not mandatory in all classes but it is certainly encouraged! I will use classroom quizzes to take attendance and points will be awarded for those.

Attendance Policy

According to the UAA Academic Catalog (p.63), a student who fails to
attend class within the first seven calendar days of the semester is
eligible for a faculty-initiated withdrawal.  Due to the number of
students wanting to enroll in this course, this policy will be
strictly enforced.  Absences will be excused for students engaged in
official university business (athletics, debate team, performing arts,
etc.) and for documented medical reasons.  If you will be absent for
either of these allowed reasons for the first week of class, it is
your responsibility to contact me with documentation before I withdraw
you from the course.
